Summerhill Farm was established in 1982 when Jeff and Nancy
Stone purchased a farm from Ralph and Margaret Teske. In early
years it had been a working dairy farm, and later a turkey farm.
In 1982, the Stones decided to use one of the original farm
buildings as a gift shop. The Barn was the very first building
to become a shop of Summerhill Farm, selling homemade crafts and
other simple gifts. Two years later, in 1984, the Carriage House
was opened to the public, with the Stable following shortly
after. Summerhill was becoming a popular place, and with more
people visiting, demand for parking space increased. The pond
was dug in 1985, so the soil from the dig could be used to
expand the lower parking lot. More customers also resulted in a
need for more merchandise, and more space. In 1986, a small
cabin was moved from the North Shore of Potato Lake and set on
the top to the hill. It was named The Cottage. With all the
shops to explore, customers began requesting a place for lunch
or a coffee break. The Sun Porch Restaurant was created in 1987
from the original farmhouse. The restaurant was expanded in 1991
with the addition of the Potting Shed and the Gazebo. In 1994
the original Carriage House and 2nd Story were torn down and
rebuilt on the same site. Always growing and changing,
Summerhill Farm created two more shops in 1999. A metal-roofed
storage building was converted and became the Pitter-Patter
Pantry, while the Treehouse went from being the Stone’s
residence to a full scale store for women’s apparel. In 2003,
Jeff and Eileen Reish moved with their family from Seattle,
Washington to continue and expand the Summerhill Farm tradition
of providing a special destination for a unique shopping and
dining experience. |
